The ticket is temporary and in the vast majority of cases will pass at the embassy. Note — there is no way to know how deep the official at the embassy / border will check, and as with any ticket that is not fully paid, there is some risk.
A PNR is a unique booking code in the airline's system. Any embassy or border official can verify it and see the booking is real if they check in depth.
Do not panic. Tell the official that you are checking and will update — then you have a few options: book a ticket through Expedia and cancel it shortly after per their rules (it is a real charge); book a bus with a real reservation that leaves the country (if available); re-book a ticket with a real PNR through another site (it too may be cancelled shortly, since the airline can void it automatically when unpaid); or book a fully paid, confirmed ticket.
In practice you can use the ticket up until the flight time, and in most cases it will pass successfully even without a PNR — unless an official at the embassy / authorities checks the airline system in depth to see whether the ticket appears. Even a ticket with a PNR is valid for at most 48 hours. An airline can cancel a held ticket that received a PNR ("HOLD") even within less than 48 hours — in which case, if checked against the airline, your ticket will not appear.
